Maui + Big Island Vanlife Vlog

November 16, 2019 in Adventure, Aloha, YouTube Videos, Landscapes

Whew! What a beautiful whirlwind those ten days were! Sleeping outside every night under the stars with the biggest rose gold glowing moon you’ve ever seen, letting the wind whip through our hair as we were cruising the winding hairpin turns presenting us with spectacular waterfalls, elementally intense craggy coastlines, the greenest jungle vines, and the lushest rolling patchwork hills you can imagine.

Update Vlog to 'Leaving Hawai'i' Vid

November 02, 2019 in Aloha, Artist Diary, YouTube Videos

Aloha friends, it has been a crazy last few weeks for me for sure! Between Halloween, packing, and trying to see all my friends and fave local bands as much as possible while I’m still on island. Since my studio is a total wreck as I’m packing things up I decided to do a lil YouTube live update today on how things are going.

Because if you think it’s difficult to move to another city or state, try moving 6000 miles from the middle of the ocean in which everything you save must be shipped or lugged onto an airplane! Yikes!

The exciting news is that I’m heading to Big Island and Maui in the nest few weeks too so if you don’t follow me on Instagram you definitely should because it’s about to get even more beautiful on my feed and story:)

Response to 'Why I'm Leaving Hawai'i'

October 30, 2019 in Adventure, Aloha, Artist Diary

Whew big news in last week’s video, huh?! Slightly bittersweet, but for the most part tremendously exciting:)

I really appreciate everyone who has sent me their best wishes and biggest support for whatever adventures the future holds, and even for those that have wondered if I’m making the right decision. I’m confident that I am, and if like to hear even more reasons why, check out these questions I answered in the comments of the YouTube vid:

IMG_2227.jpg

Wouldn't you be able to sell your work/prints online? There are major art galleries online, that way you can live anywhere and sell. Also, are you trying to get in brick and mortar galleries in the main land? You can ship your work to them, the same as when you get into another gallery on CA when you live in FL. My thoughts are that you will regret it in a few months, I've met people who have moved from Hawaii then took 2 years to get back. But, sometimes when you live in paradise you forget how deep the day-by-day hardships of living elsewhere, same problems but without paradise, the grass is always greener....

Those are some excellent points, M****, and ones I have thought long and hard about before reaching this decision :) I do have originals and prints available online but I very rarely sell to folks who have not experienced my work in person, which I think is true of many artists. The online art world is just sooooo saturated which makes it difficult to have one's work connect with people via a tiny swipe screen when competing with 10,000 other artists doing the exact same thing. Plus I am more fulfilled interacting with people with my art in person. And don't even get me started on the extremely limited (and frankly not well-paying) teaching opportunities out here. There is absolutely no comparison with mainland opportunities.

And I have had my work in galleries on the mainland since coming out here, but do you have any idea how expensive that is? The artist must pre-pay shipping both there and back in specific gallery-approved boxes, and that's after paying an application fee to get into the show. It has cost me in the past around $170 to show two pieces in one show, which I wasn't even able to attend because of the flight cost, hotel, missed work etc. And since I wasn't there I was not able to meet folks and have them form a deeper connection with my work so I honestly don't know if those shows even benefit me more than adding one line to my CV.

I know I won't regret moving because Hawaii is not going anywhere and I can always come back. Honestly the hard part about moving to Hawaii is first making the leap. Now I am comfortable here on O'ahu with lots of welcoming friends and feel like I could move back any time, if I should choose. I think sometimes living in 'paradise' looks a little different to folks on the outside than to folks actually experiencing day to day challenges like anywhere else in the world. I do not think it's healthy to have to work 60 hours a week to live comfortably, and the folks who do out here don't even get to adventure and enjoy paradise on a regular basis. It's a shame! Trust me, if I could feel fulfilled as an artist and traveler while making O'ahu my home base I would.

Everyone who lives on island that I have discussed this with has completely understood and many say they will leave one day to for similar reasons once they're done having fun in the sun. There's a reason why most folks who move here stay for about 3-5 years then move on with their lives, better and happier for the opportunity to enjoy this great land.

By all means, move on out to the island and give a whirl for yourself!

IMG_9626.jpg

BTW, I live in the cheaper part of the country, a very boring Kansas City where a mango is $2.50 cents, a salad greens in a plastic box at supermarket is $6.50, rent is $600/mth for a small studio, minimum wage is around $7/hr., we will be in the 30's degrees at night this week, all plants are crammed inside. You become inside. Soon I will only see nature on the way to work and back.

Our supermarkets are about 20-25% more expensive across the board so the prices you listed are the same out here. A small studio starts at $1200 if you are extremely lucky and you don't need a stove. Add that to gas at 3.80 and all home goods and online shipping prices up around 20% too. Parking can easily cost $100 a month (sometimes even at your own building!) and, on a personal note, it costs around $1000 every time I want to see my mom.

I have driven through about 47/48 states (including camping in yours during some insane wind which we later discovered was ripe for tornadoes based off the tornado-chasers we met - wow!) and know how to live my life outdoors as much as possible. I appreciate the concern regarding finding 'greener pastures', which I know will be tough considering how gosh darn lush it is on island, but I am ready to experience all kinds of beauty in this one life I have to lead. Hope you'll decide to join me for the ride:)

IMG_5636.JPG

And I hope you all will too! This life is prime for adventure, and I plan on heeding that call!

3D Oil Painting :: Delicate

October 25, 2019 in 3D Paintings, Studio, YouTube Videos

Welcome to my latest 3D oil painting, 'Delicate' featuring one seriously creepy scene. The figure and white plumeria flowers are painted in oil, with an aerosol background. The bugs are actually shed cicada exoskeletons (whoa!) and the faux orange flowers spilling down the front made this a super fun piece to create.

Why I'm Leaving Hawai'i...

October 18, 2019 in Aloha, Adventure, Artist Diary, YouTube Videos

Oh my yessss, folks, believe it or not my time on this fabulous lil island has come to an end. But it’s not a reason to be sad at all! Far from it! There are many more exciting adventures on the horizon - Yay:):):)

If you’d like to read a bit about my thought process while coming to this decision, as well as my next adventure plans, check out my latest Birds of a Feather newsletter here where I dive in a lil deeper on my prospects as an artist here vs the mainland. And if you generally like to be in the know about big news coming from the Nest weeks before my YouTube or Insta fam make sure you subscribe to my newsletter here where you’ll also get a more personal peek at this working artist’s life in ways I don’t necessarily share publicly…

If you didn’t see my recent vid all about my life on O’ahu these past four years check it out here.

It has not been an easy decision, but it is the right one and after every mind-expanding, worldly, beautiful, or transcendent experience I remind myself not to be sad that it’s over, but to be happy it happened.

I love you, folks! And I can’t wait to take you on so many more adventures with me!!

Camping on Top of a Mountain!

October 16, 2019 in Adventure, Aloha

23 intense hours on a ridge including one wild whipping windy wet night on the edge of an insane precipice of the Ko’olau mountains!

On my most extreme adventure to date with my twinsie Emsy we decided to hike the Mau’umae ridge to the Ko’olau summit, camp for the night, then turn right and hike the hairpin mother mountain to the next ridge offshoot, Wiliwilinui, which we had staged a car at the end of.

IMG_9665.jpg
Trails as narrow as your foot!

Trails as narrow as your foot!

We made it about halfway through our journey and had to turn back at the Lanipo peak because the trail ceased to exist. We tried busting through the vegetation for a few minutes to see if we could pick back up on the ridge on the other side, but considering that’s how hikers disappear we decided to play it safe and go back the way we came. Good thing that only added two hours to our plan that day, for a total of just under 9 hours hiking in two days.

IMG_9614.jpg

We started our journey on Wednesday with the warm afternoon sun hiking up into the white-out clouds, then as evening approached and got chillier we reached the summit where the wind is always stronger. We were able to get the tent set up and change into warm clothes before snuggling in while feeling our tent get whipped around like there was a full grown man jostling it from the outside.

IMG_6211.JPG
IMG_E9645.JPG

We didn’t want to carry too much weight in our packs so we opted for multiple clothing layers rather than blankets or sleeping bags. Unfortunately the tarp under our tent didn’t quite keep the rain from seeping in the bottom so about mid-way through the night we both found ourselves with chilly wet pants. We half-slept til morning with the rain luckily abating and the sun welcoming us with a view looking down upon practically the entire island.

IMG_E6206.JPG

After a light breakfast we set off to climb the Ko’olau range, which has been a personal goal of mine, and let me tell you that is one skinny ridge line! Whew! The trail is mostly directly on the tippy top of the ridge with plenty of it being less that 1 foot wide. There are lots of bushes of ferns surrounding the trail which give you a sense of security, however the rooting can be deceitful. Certain areas can look like a good place for your foot but can really be disguising a hole that could send you straight down the side of the mountain under the shrubs should you place your weight in the wrong position. Needless to say this Birdie had no problem utilizing her 3 points of contact continuously. As we made our way back to the car on Thursday the sun was really blazing by noon and those last two hours sent us shimmying to get back into the shade.

IMG_E9656.JPG
IMG_6192.JPG

All in all the journey was muddy and brutal and super intense in all of the most wonderful ways and I am so grateful to have shared this experience with my adventure sister Emsy ...because who doesn’t love to torture themselves with a good challenge, right?!

What To Do With Used Oil Paint

October 11, 2019 in Studio, Tutorials, YouTube Tutorials, YouTube Videos

Aloha folks, I hope you find today’s video especially useful around the studio because I’ve had a surprising amount of questions regarding what to do with used paint, either as a way to extend its life and keep using it, or as how to properly dispose of it.

Lucky you because today I’m gonna cover both!

Shout out to Mike Cleland, amongst a few more, for this video idea :)

As a side note, let me please emphasize again that it is very important to dispose of oil rags + old paint properly and not in your household trash. Unfortunately, that stuff is not good to seep in the soil no matter how ā€˜odorless’ or inoffensive it may seem. Let’s all do our part to clean up after ourselves and love our Mother Earth while we create amazing works of art, ok?

30 Day Instagram Challenge

October 04, 2019 in Art Biz Advice, YouTube Videos

Okee dokee folks, this week’s vid is a big one! I came up with a big worksheet full of ways to boost engagement on your artsy Instagram page and I’m gonna show you exactly how I did mine.

It was a lot of work but I definitely did get a lot of new eyes on my artwork so I’m pretty happy with the results. Hopefully this vid will inspire you to get more active and excited with your page because with IG’s ever-changing and often mysterious algorithm it can feel disheartening at times to post your very best work when you feel almost no appreciation in return.

Here is my completed spreadsheet:

And here’s a blank printable copy of the worksheet for you!

3D Oil Painting Demo :: Fern Tummy

September 26, 2019 in 3D Paintings, Oil Paintings, YouTube Videos, Studio

Well the name pretty much says it all with this new cute lil piece. At only 4x3 inches I believe this may be the smallest oil painting I’ve ever created, and certainly the smallest 3D one for sure!

I incorporated some of my favorite ferns I see on all my Hawai’i hikes. fractal ferns. They are especially sturdy and they seem to hold some color fairly well even after being dried for a few months. I can’t wait to use fern more in the future for these works. There are so many varieties and are some of my fave plants for sure!

Here’s my tutorial on frame-making:

My Life in Hawai'i

September 20, 2019 in Adventure, Aloha, Studio

Welcome to my happy Hawai'i life!! I am so excited to share my cute town, favorite hikes and beaches, and plenty of adventure hula hooping with you today!

I've been on O'ahu for just under four years, and while it certainly feels like home at this point, there is still so much of the island I'm still discovering. Although I have always been an outdoors person, living here has taken my love of the natural world to entirely new heights.

Enjoy this lil snapshot of Hawai'ian life and if you haven't yet, go ahead and add O'ahu to your bucket list - you will not be disappointed!!
