Exploring Maya Ruins in Chichen Itza

April 22, 2022

Wow wowowow! Wow! That’s really all I know how to say after visiting my very first ruins outside of ancient Roman ones in Europe. Now I knew that there would be some ancient Maya pyramids in the area before we came down to Yucatán, but I had no idea we would be so close to the biggest ones on the entire peninsula and that that would be so easily accessible. It was awesome to explore these monumental structures created half a millennia ago with peoples’ bare hands.

We had a truly amazing guy who told us all about what the different structures were used for and even deciphered some of the carvings we were seeing. There was of course the largest main pyramid, but I wound up really enjoying some of the smaller structures more because you could really get up close and see a lot more detail of them with far fewer people around.

I just loved the giant snake heads at the base of all the staircases. We learned that on the equinoxes the sun would line up just right casting a shadow that made it look like the snakes were actually slithering down the side of the pyramid, and these days over 30,000 people can show up on those certain days of the year to watch it happen.

Our guide also told us the craziest thing about their ancient ball game called Pok-ta-pok, which was vaguely reminiscent to basketball, that they played in between these matching stone structures below. They would have one major competition every year here at Chichen Itza with two teams of seven people each, and the captain of the winning team would actually wind up getting decapitated, if you can believe that!

The athletes would agree to this ‘highest honor’ due to the fact that it was a sacrificial decapitation and then his family would elevate to the highest priesthood from then and forevermore, so even though he would lose his life his entire lineage would be elevated permanently in their culture. Conversely, the capitan of the losing team got to keep his life, but his entire family dropped in the caste system. All the athletes were volunteers, just willing to do it for the glory and the betterment of their families.

You can actually see a carving depicting the winner on the right with a geyser of blood springing from his shoulders and the loser on the left with his own head intact and clutching the winners head in his fist. Is that the most backward game you ever heard of or what?!

Check out this awesome handmade batik tank top I bought from the market surrounding Chichen Itza of the ‘winner’! Score!

Visiting the ruins of Chichen Itza was just one of many incredible things we saw on our 9 day trip to Merida. I don’t know that I’ve ever had so much magic packed into such a short time, but if you haven’t yet check out my first blog post showing off our magnificent “little palace” hotel, then a second blog post sharing more of the street scenes and the day we got to spend with the wild flamingos, and finally a Vlog I work so hard on sharing the whole trip along with the five paintings I created around the trip.

Merida Art + Travel Vlog

April 17, 2022

I’m so thrilled to finally bring you the full travel + art vlog from one of the most magical places I have ever been in my life! The colors, the culture, the history, the hospitality - all were top notch in Merida and the surrounding Yucatan area. I was so inspired I did one gouache painting there of our spectacular hotel, El Palacito Secreto (The Little Secret Palace), and then four more from our various adventures once I got home (like this one of the front of our hotel and another cute street scene!).

This painting was from the day we visited the Maya ruins at Chichen Izta - the largest ones in all of Yucatan! I shared a bunch more photos from this day in on my last blog post. Just seeing stone structures that were half a millennia years old and still preserved so well was truly awe-inspiring. My respect for ancient architects grows each time I’m able to travel to such exquisite places.

The day we boated through the mangroves to see the thousands of wild flamingoes was a day I won’t soon forget! They were so loud and animated and watching them run on water to take off was hilariously surprising! This is my lil gouache rendering, and you can see the actual photos from that day on this blog post.

And lastly, though probably my favorite, the small saffron yellow town of Izamal was every artist’s dream and jsut about the quaintest place I have ever been in my life! You definitely need to see more pics here.

Cheers!

Merida, Mexico Part 2: The Wow Continues!

April 14, 2022 in Adventure, Artist Diary

Ok I know I’ve been promising more from Merida, and I’ve finally got a few minutes to sit down and share. In my last post, I had shown some of the great architecture and our fabulous hotel, El Palacito Secreto (The Little Secret Palace), and today I want share more of the greater Yucatan area we got to see, including a fabulous golden yellow town - a real artist’s dream!

First up is Izamal, a brightly painted saffron colored town. The reason the entire town (not just the square, but all the residences too!) was originally painted yellow was to celebrate Pope John Paul visiting in 1993 so the townspeople wanted to show him they were The Sun City, the light of God, but afterward apparently they liked it (and the tourism dollars) so much they have continued repainting it yellow ever since! Pictures truly don’t do it justice… it’s magnificent!

This is actually a Franciscan Convent built a few hundred years ago directly on a Maya pyramid, so by walking up these steps we are literally walking on a stone structure built by hand hundreds of years ago.

Say Cheeeese! (And also expect to see a painting of this magical place coming out soon!)

Many of the Yucatan towns had these festive colorful signs in their squares, so cute!

And Venkman even got to meet the Pope! What a day!

Have you ever heard of a cenote? I hadn’t! They are these underground crystal clear rivers and waterways accessed by open pits created by sinkholes. There are thousands of them around Yucatan, and when you’re swimming in one you often can’t see the bottom!

Sometimes the cenotes would be 60 feet down in the earth! We swam in this one and it was a bit chilly!

This cenote is from our day visiting the flamingoes and was much warmer since it was at surface level.

The view from inside the cenote in the image above. There were all kinds of vines and stalactites hanging down - such a vibe!

The answer is yes, people do scuba dive in them, but no, I did not. Caving of any kind seems way more terrifying than exciting to this Bird. What can I say? I feel a lil safer in the open air ;)

We also went on a boat trip in an immense biological reserve where there were five to ten thousand flamingoes hanging out, eating shrimp, and generally soaking up the sun. We were so lucky to be in Merida during the time of year they migrate because I have never seen one in the wild, much less gotten to see them actually take off and fly!

I actually got video of them taking off which I will be sharing in my upcoming art+ travel vlog. It’s really hilarious the way they kinda run on the water to takeoff like an airplane!

I feel so lucky to be able to make all these memories with my best friend ever, my mom:):)

And if you’re wondering about the local fare, well it has surely not disappointed. We gushed and exclaimed over meal after meal of the best authentic Mexican and Maya dishes, and some of the freshest seafood around!

We did actually go to Chichen Itza, the largest Maya ruins in Yucatan, as well as some great Maya museums, but since this post got a little long I’m going to tease it out to one more blog post. Also, keep your eyes out for my next YouTube vid to see some of these images get transformed into gouache paintings!

'Splendorifica' :: New 3D Oil Painting

April 05, 2022 in 3D Paintings, YouTube Videos

Hooray hooray! I was finally able to finish this large oil and resin portrait! My first ever 3D portrait of a male subject! And he’s got the most insect adornments of anyone I’ve painted so far!

This model is actually a Charleston/hometown friend of mine from way back in my middle school days of mixed tapes and Airwalks, Chris, who I’ve been lucky enough to have a super deep connection with still to this day.

I love the look of wonderment and possibility captured in his face. Knowing Chris as an intellect and thoughtful person, I really wanted to bring that personality trait to the forefront of this piece in an infectious way. I want the viewer to get lost in thought with Chris’ still dynamism as he almost seems to be pondering a clear future right in front of us.

This piece is a nice large size of 14 x 18” and includes a real butterfly, a bee, a lizard, a leaf bug, a wasp, a cicada and two water bug exoskeletons, and a few reproduction butterflies along with a flurry of gold leaf and pink pinwheels the tree outside my apartment shed last fall. Add in a few dried ferns and the painted-on mushrooms and Chris really is pretty well splendidly nature-iffic!

I know most of us are used to painting and drawing the lovely ladies most of the time, but today I’m happy to show that guys can be just as inspiring too! I know I certainly plan to paint more!

March 20, 2022 in Art Biz Advice, YouTube Tutorials, Studio

If you saw my video last time about the 11 essential things every artist website should have, I had to cut myself off from going on a tangent discussing why every artist should have a simple blog on their website in order to make that video concise. The Colorful World of Merida, Mexico!!

March 16, 2022 in Adventure

Wow, this city is marvelous beyond our wildest dreams! Merida, Mexico is vibrant, colorful, full of very old history as well as culturally vibrant today! We think we’ve found a real paradise south of the border!

But let me back up a minute, because you’re probably wondering who, what, and where I am talking about since I was too pressed for time last week to write a post explaining my exciting upcoming trip!

My most favorite mama, who I loooove traveling with, picked out this amazing destination in Yucatan about an hour from the coast where the history of the Maya, the Aztec, and the Spanish is alive and well in a bustling yet still quaint small city named Merida. All the locals we’ve spoken with (as well as what we have certainly experienced in our first three days) have told us proudly that this is the safest city in all of Mexico, which has really made our time here effortlessly fun, any time day or evening.

We’re staying at this magical spot only about four blocks from the famous Calle de Montejo and about 5 blocks from the old city center where most of the incredible architecture is. We arrived Saturday evening and in just these few days we’ve really fallen in love with everything about this place!

Here are some shots from inside the walls of the very aptly name ‘El Palicito Secreto’ (‘The Little Secret Palace’) that we can hardly believe is our home for the whole week! We’re enjoying going out in the day as much as we’re enjoying staying in in the evening after dinner!

We’re even doing a few paintings of the gorgeous architecture inside the ‘palace’. There’s actually only 11 suites here and the staff are incredibly friendly, speak great english, and take care of any drivers or tours we need. What heaven!

I’ll definitely share more from Merida next week! Thursday we are going to a bio reserve to see thousands of flamingos and the next day we’re going to ancient Mayan ruins - my first time visiting ancient ruins outside of Europe - I can’t wait!!

11 Artist Website Essentials

March 06, 2022 in Art Biz Advice, YouTube Tutorials

We talk a lot here about what your small art biz needs to succeed. At the top of that list is a website, so today I am breaking down 11 components that you definitely need to have for a successful, professional art biz website.

Today’s vid has a lot of information in it, but don’t stress having every single thing finished and perfect before launching your creative website. Really items 1-4 must be ready at launch, and the other things you can work on and add as you go.

Below is the list of all the other helpful videos I reference during this one. Just bookmark this blog post and come back to each video one at a time as you’re ready to tackle each step. And don’t forget I am always here to guide you one-on-one through my Creative Coaching programs if you like more of a hands-on approach with feedback for creating your website.

11 Things Your Artist Website Must Have:

  1. A gorgeous gallery with great pics! Even if you are just starting out and only have 8-10 artworks to post, it’s never too early to make sure they are high quality. Here’s a video I made about the easiest way to take quality art photos using natural light and a smart phone. And here’s one if your art is shiny and has a glare.

  2. Social media links. If someone has taken the time to visit your website, they probably like your art enough to want to follow you so show them all the ways they can right from your home page!

  3. Contact info. Definitely make sure folks can send you a message because you never know what kind of commissions or opportunities you’ll miss out on if folks can’t reach you. Don’t share your phone number here though, just a contact form and email.

  4. About Me page. This is a casual way folks can get to know you. Think of it like a conversational introduction to why you do what you do. I’ve got a video for you here on how to write a short About Me that really compels people to want to learn more about your journey as an artist.

  5. A Bio. This is different than the About Me page; it’s a little more factual and might be something you come back to later as you’ve progressed on your educational or professional art journey. When you are ready though, ya Birdie has got a video for you right here.

  6. An online Shop. Give the people what they want... the ability to purchase your artwork - yay! Here’s a great video on how to create a tempting and beautiful online art store (or an alternate video if you’re really only ready to sell through Instagram for now).

  7. An Artist Statement. It doesn’t have to be a long one if you’re just starting out, but folks who visit your website and like your work definitely want to know about why you create what you do and what you’re hoping your work will do in this world. It’s one of the trickier things for artists to do, but one of the most important. Go make a cup of tea and watch this video full of step-by-step information and inspiration for writing an exciting artist statement that will really connect with your audience.

  8. A listing of any Awards, Accolades, Press, and your CV. Basically any documents or links showing other people have paid attention to you as an artist, or that you have started to make your mark on the professional art world. Again another one I have a video for that you can watch when you’re ready.

  9. A blog. I know, I can hear the groans from here, but all this is is a simple place to update your audience on any interesting artistic projects, happenings, exhibitions, ventures, or art-related events that may be going on in your life or studio. It really only needs to be updated every month or two to show both your website visitors as well as search engine algorithms that you are an active artist working on current projects. There are multiple great reasons to host your own art blog, which I’ll tell you all about in this video.

  10. A Newsletter sign up form. Another great way to connect with your audience is by having a newsletter. Trust me, you do not want to rely solely on social media for connecting with your audience. You need to have a way to connect with your audience and collectors that you are in complete control of by sending out periodic newsletter updates. Here’s a video explaining why this is so important, and how to write a great one.

  11. Legal stuff. Definitely the driest part of your website, but a total necessity. Just clear a few days from your art biz calendar and learn how to tackle this beast right here. Luckily, you really only need to do it once, and then just check on or update it yearly.

  12. OPTIONAL: A custom art or services contact form. If you provide anything custom, such as family portraits, murals, graphic design, or even consulting or tutorial sessions, having a distinct contact form to get the conversation started between you and your potential client shows that you are a professional in control of the situation and their artistic needs will be met. A real win for both of you!

Now I know that’s a lot of info for you all in one day…

But don’t worry! I have compiled all of those videos on one playlist right here you can save on YouTube and come back to as you are ready for each step.

And of course I am here as a Creative Coach that is more than happy to help you through each step of setting up a beautiful website you can really be proud of. I also do website reviews to give a helpful critique of what you’ve already got setup with a ton of suggestions to really help it shine. Drop me a line here to chat further about options.

A Visit to Cheekwood Sculpture Garden

March 02, 2022

At the end of last year I was invited to help judge a high school art competition as a representative of Nossi and wound up really enjoying it! It was my first time being on an art competition jury, and since I had never done it before I jumped at the opportunity to experience yet another facet of being part of an artistic community.

These three were a few of my favorites I voted for. I mean, you know I’m obsessed with this shadow shapes, and I also loved the alternate mediums too! So interesting! Suck skilled young people!

The gardens weren’t exactly in full bloom in the middle of February, but it was fun to interact with a few of the sculptures and see the orchid show that was happening at the time too.

There were also a few random paintings, mostly of the family that originally owned Cheekwood Estate, but I really fell in love with these four seasons mini tapestries. Don’t they remind you of Alphonse Mucha’s 4 seasons so much? Such ethereal beauty:)

There were definitely a number of nice details hidden throughout the house too. Like these great sculptures in relief or the gorgeous inlaid stone tucked into some really surprising spaces.

If you like joining me on my art excursions, make sure you’re following me on Instagram @caleighbirdart where I love to fill up my stories with all kinds of artsy adventures.

Recent Pet + Portrait Commissions

February 20, 2022 in YouTube Videos, Studio

I realize I actually don’t share many of the custom paintings or drawings I create for private clients (especially when they are surprise gifts!) so today I thought I would share a few recent pet and portrait commissions. Usually for family/couples/kids portraits I use pencil and white conte, but I do get asked to do the occasional oil portrait too. The one featured in this video was a unique challenge, but the client was thrilled and I felt accomplished making it work.

This first image is a chalk pastel drawing of Cooper, the puppers belonging to my long time client, Helen. He’s an active lil guy and pops up to say hi on her weekly blog as well as on our regular Zoom calls. So cute!

This second one was and oil painting I created for a Christmas gift and took a bit of skill to craft from two different photos, one being really old and one being modern and from a different angle. My client was thrilled that I was able to reunite her father with his late mother, which was a great feeling for me. You can see the challenges and process here.

This is a graphite (pencil) and white conte portrait of a couple I know from Hawai’i. Brittany commissioned this piece for their five year anniversary as a couple, and then Seth proposed soon after! How picture perfect is that?!?

Sweet Cassie made her way over the big rainbow bridge last year, but I am always humbled and honored to make memorial portraits of the most tender member of our family. These use both chalk pastel sticks for the larger blends and chalk pastel pencils for getting in the more refined details. My goal is always to pull as much personality out of pet portrait as possible, for their owners to celebrate and reminisce for all time.

If you have a family member (furry or otherwise) you’d like to commemorate, pop over to this page and tell me what’s one your mind. I’ll be happy to give you a no-obligation quote and help you think of the best way to capture their spirit forever :)

Upcoming Portrait Painting Magic

February 17, 2022 in YouTube Videos, Studio

I’ve been working hard on finishing up my first 3D painting of 2022, and along the way I’ve ben creating little teasers for Instagram and YouTube.

One thing I’m especially excited about is that this is the first painting of a man I have done in quite a while, and this particular guy happens to be a good friend of mine from all the way back to the days of mixed tapes and beepers. The photo is so striking and I’m thrilled with the painting thus far.

This first video is the drawing phase…

These two share Chris’ facial features coming in.

And this last one shows a bit of the process painting chicken of the woods mushrooms as well as some tiny white mushrooms on Chris. They actually weren’t in the initial design, but I decided it needed a little something else.

At this point I’m all finished painting it, but now I’m waiting on global-supply-chain-issue resin to finally come in the mail. Fingers crossed it’s not too far away now!
